The Experience

When the sun sets, Mombasa's true magic awakens

Mombasa transforms as the equatorial sun dips below the horizon. The daytime heat gives way to a cooling Indian Ocean breeze, the muezzin's call to prayer echoes across the narrow alleys of Old Town, and the ancient coral walls of Fort Jesus are bathed in golden light. This evening excursion is designed to capture the romance, history, and culinary heritage of East Africa's most storied port city.

Your evening begins at the Old Port, where you will board a traditional Swahili dhow. As twilight descends, drift along Tudor Creek with a welcome cocktail in hand, watching the city's lights reflect on the water. The rhythmic lapping of the waves and the silhouette of the coastline provide a serene contrast to the bustling city you left behind.

Disembarking near the illuminated ramparts of Fort Jesus, you will be guided inside the 16th-century fortress for an immersive Sound and Light show. Through blazing torches, theatrical lighting, and dramatic narration, 400 years of turbulent history—battles between the Portuguese, Omani Arabs, and the British—are brought vividly to life. The evening culminates in a spectacular alfresco dinner served within the fort's open courtyard, featuring grilled seafood, Swahili spices, and a canopy of stars overhead.

Why This Tour

A sensory journey through coastal history

Lantern-lit waters, the scent of coastal spices, and stories of ancient empires coming to life under the African sky.

Sunset Dhow Cruise

Board a beautifully crafted traditional wooden dhow and sail the calm waters of Tudor Creek. Watch the city skyline transition from day to dusk as the setting sun paints the Indian Ocean in brilliant shades of orange and violet.

Fort Jesus Sound & Light Show

A masterfully choreographed visual and audio experience inside the UNESCO World Heritage fortress. Flaming torches and light projections tell the epic tale of the sultans, soldiers, and sailors who fought for control of Mombasa.

Dinner Under the Stars

Dine in the open-air courtyard of Fort Jesus or overlooking the harbor. The setting is unforgettably romantic, combining the grandeur of 16th-century architecture with the gentle warmth of the tropical night.

Swahili Culinary Feast

Enjoy a lavish dinner featuring the rich, aromatic flavors of the coast. Expect fresh grilled lobster, prawns, coconut-infused curries, spiced pilau rice, and traditional chapati, prepared to perfection.

Old Town Atmosphere

Experience the Old Town free from the daytime heat and crowds. The illuminated carved doors and winding alleyways take on a mysterious, evocative charm that transports you back in time.

Before You Go

Practical information

How to prepare for a comfortable and memorable night out in Mombasa.

What to Wear

Smart-casual evening wear is recommended. Mombasa remains warm and humid at night, so lightweight fabrics like cotton or linen are ideal. Flat, comfortable walking shoes are essential for navigating the uneven stone floors of Fort Jesus.

Photography

Bring a camera capable of good low-light photography to capture the dhow cruise and the illuminated fort. However, flash photography is generally prohibited during the Sound and Light Show so as not to ruin the projections.

Mosquito Protection

Because part of the evening is spent near the water and dining alfresco, it is highly recommended to apply a good quality mosquito repellent before you leave your hotel.

Dietary Requirements

The standard dinner relies heavily on fresh coastal seafood. If you are vegetarian, vegan, or have a seafood allergy, please inform us at the time of booking so the chefs can prepare an equally spectacular alternative for you.

Sea Conditions

The dhow cruise takes place within the sheltered waters of Tudor Creek and the Old Harbour, not on the open ocean. The water is generally very calm, making seasickness highly unlikely even for sensitive travelers.

Timings from Diani

Guests staying in Diani will have an earlier pick-up time (often around 16:00) to account for the Likoni Ferry crossing during evening rush hour. You will return to your hotel later in the evening, usually around 22:30.

Preserving Coastal Heritage

Participating in the Mombasa By Night excursion helps support the National Museums of Kenya in their ongoing efforts to maintain and restore Fort Jesus. Furthermore, the evening showcases the traditional craftsmanship of local dhow builders and sustains the livelihoods of local Swahili chefs, performers, and crew, ensuring these cultural traditions continue to thrive in the modern era.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mombasa By Night FAQs

Is the Sound and Light Show in English?

Yes, the narration for the historical Sound and Light Show at Fort Jesus is delivered in English, with dramatic sound effects and music that make the story easily understandable and captivating for international visitors.

What happens if it rains?

Mombasa generally enjoys clear evenings, but in the event of unexpected rain, the dinner is moved to a beautiful covered area within the fort or at a nearby premium restaurant to ensure your comfort without compromising the quality of the meal.

Is this excursion suitable for young children?

While children are welcome, the tour is generally best suited for adults, couples, and older children (8+ years). The focus on history, the seated dinner, and the late finish time can sometimes be tiring for toddlers and very young children.

Are drinks included with dinner?

A welcome drink is typically provided on the dhow or upon arrival at dinner. However, additional beverages—including wine, beer, and sodas ordered during the meal—are charged separately. A full bar service is available.

Can we do this instead of the daytime city tour?

They offer very different experiences. The daytime tour focuses on exploring the Marikiti Market, walking the streets of Old Town, and viewing the museum exhibits inside the fort. The night tour is focused on romance, dining, and theatrical storytelling. Many guests choose to do both on different days to see the two faces of Mombasa.
