3 Days Tsavo East & West Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Explore Tsavo West – The Land of Lava, Springs & Wildlife

Depart the hotel at 6:00 AM and drive along the Mombasa-Malindi Highway. The journey takes approximately 90 minutes, with a short washroom break en route. Enter Tsavo West through the Mtito Andei Gate, a name that means “Place of Eagles.” Tsavo West is a breathtaking landscape, untouched and unspoiled since the beginning of time.

Enjoy a game drive upon entry, with your driver-guide taking you to Mzima Springs, a natural mineral spring teeming with huge Nile crocodiles, hippos, fish, and other fascinating creatures. After this visit, check in at the lodge for a late lunch.

In the afternoon, embark on another exciting game drive in your specially designed safari vehicle with a pop-up roof for optimal wildlife viewing. Visit the dried Shetani lava flow—named after the Swahili word for “devil”—where you can explore ancient lava caves. At an extra fee, you can book a guided cave tour with a ranger. Keep an eye out for the Big Five, and if you’re up for it, challenge yourself with a hike up Chaimu Black Lava Hill for stunning panoramic views.

Day 2: Discover Tsavo East – The Theatre of Africa

After breakfast, depart Tsavo West, driving down the scenic Ngulia Hills and passing by Maji ya Kuldip, a waterhole named after Kuldip Singh Oberoi, the first private tour operator in Mombasa and the founder of the company. Exit the park through Tsavo River and drive a short distance to Manyani Gate, where you enter Tsavo East.

Welcome to Tsavo East, famously known as “The Theatre of Africa.” Begin an exciting game drive in this vast wilderness, which is larger than some countries. Keep an eye out for four of the Big Five—elephants, leopards, buffalos, and lions. After four hours of thrilling wildlife viewing, proceed to your lodge for lunch, followed by an hour of rest.

In the afternoon, set off on another game drive, soaking in the raw beauty and incredible wildlife of Tsavo East.

Day 3: Morning Safari & Return to Mombasa

Start your day with an early morning game drive, experiencing the crisp morning air and the refreshing scent of petrichor rising from the dew-covered grass. Return to the lodge for breakfast and checkout before beginning the drive back to Mombasa or Diani, arriving by early afternoon.
