We offer the following tours and excursions from within Mombasa:
Mombasa with its blend of ancient and modern buildings is claimed to be the oldest town in East Africa. A comprehensive tour of the island will include the Fort Jesus, built by the Portuguese in 1593, guarding the entrance to the old harbour. It still stands today as a museum holding a fascinating collection of historical coastal artefacts. The tour further takes you to the old Arab town with its maze of narrow twisting alleys, displaying the beautifully carved doors, goldsmiths, curio shops, Hindu temple and finally, the Akamba handicraft co-operative, where over 1500 members produce a great variety of every reasonably priced wood carvings. Before returning to the hotel, we take you on a drive to the Bazaar for a short shopping expedition.
A short drive south of Mombasa passing through lush countryside to the Shimba Hills game reserve where it’s possible to see Elephant, Buffalo, Giraffes, Roan and Sable Antelopes, Waterbucks, Baboons, and a wide variety of bird life.
Pick up from your hotel around 7:30hrs and 8:00hrs. Drive through the countryside to Kaloleni, the market place deep in Giriama land. See flora and fauna and farmland with its houses and villages and the beautiful tropical countryside. Visit the local market in Kaloleni where there is an opportunity to see St Luke’s hospital and the St John’s girls secondary boarding school run by the missionary of the Anglican Church.
From here, continue through Chonyi land, to a village situated in the lush coast vegetation. Visit the primary school and meet the local medicine man. Experience daily life in the Giriama village and sample local brews. From here, we continue our excursion through the mango and sisal plantation on our drive to Porini village for a late African lunch and entertainment with local dancers. After lunch, we return to the hotel at approximately 16:30hrs.
Drive 125kms North of Mombasa passing through large sisal plantations. Stop on route at Gedi ruins – an ancient Arab city in the heart of a dense forest. The tour includes a trip aboad a glass bottomed boat to the Marine National Park where you have an ideal opportunity [tide permitting] to snorkel. Lunch at the hotel, and later visit the Falconry – an exotic bird farm before returning to your hotel.
Kenya Marinas Sundowner [Evening] Tour No KTM105
Boarding of the Dhow commences at approximately 15:30hrs at the Kenya Marine-land jetty. The evening begins with a leisurely sail into the inland waters of Mtwapa Creek on a traditional Arab dhow. Experience the sun setting over the African wilderness. The cooking fires of the local villages scent in the air. Capture exquisite sunset views lined with giant Boabad trees. Relax with some soothing entertainment as you take in the tropical scenery. As night falls, the stars begin to shine and the dhows join together. Torches and lit and cow-hide drums set the scene for a spectacular Limbo and Acrobatic display, followed by an authentic African fashion show.
With the night set in, a host of Maasai warriors begin flaming torches, chanting their welcome back ritual for the arrival at the Aquamarine restaurant. As guests make their way ashore into the candle-lit, open-air, palm tree terrace lit up to the rich sounds of an African choir. Guests then wine and dine at their leisure. Departure from Kenya Marine is around approximately 22:30hrs.
This tour takes you by road to Shimoni – approximately 85 miles south of the urban centres of Mombasa. At Shimoni, you board an old Arab dhow, now motorized for flexibility, and sail through an enchanting seascape of islets and reefs to the marvels of the underwater world at the Kisite Marine National Park. Time means nothing here, as you float into an exotic world of marine fantasy whilst even the most critical of gastronomic tastes will be satisfied with a locally-caught seafood lunch. Return to the jetty where the bus awaits your arrival to take you back to the hotel.
Pilli-Pipa Dhow- [Full day] Tour No KTM107
The “Pilli-Pipa” dhow is more correctly referred to as the Arabia Red Sea Sambuk, built from teak. The beautiful motorized dhow is well equipped, including life jackets, an inboard WC cushioned sun-beds, snorkelling equipment and a fully trained crew and marine guide to ensure comfort of all passengers.
The Arab style dhow “Pilli-Pipa” departs from Shimoni jetty at 8:30hrs onwards, and returns at approximately 16:00hrs. The full day excursion provides a fascinating guided snorkelling safari in the famous Kisite Marine National Park. The park together with surrounding islands has an extensive reef system and is the home of crystal waters, which reveal a variety of coral life and an abundance of vibrantly coloured tropical fish. This is followed by the exhilarating experience of a dhow under sail [weather permitting] on the way to Wasini island for a memorable seafood lunch. The al-fresco lunch is served with wine, within the grounds of a private property on this unspoiled island.
Numbers are limited to not only maintain the private nature of this experience, but also to minimize the intrusion on Kisite’s fragile marine environment.
Tamarind Dhow [Evening] Tour No KTM1087
Transfer from your hotel to the Tamarind jetty where the Arab dhow is anchored, ready to sail. The dhow passes the flood-lit area of the old harbour and Tudor creek. Dinner is prepared by the chefs on board, as you enjoy the sunset and listen to live music. After a delicious meal, the anchor is dropped. Dance to the strains of the resident band, returning to the jetty for a transfer back to your hotel.
Includes dinner at an Indian restaurant followed by a visit to a Casino and Nightclub; pick-up from the hotel at 19:00hrs. Dinner served at a specialty Indian restaurant, offering a wide choice of a la carte dishes. Thereafter, a visit to the casino and night club, returning to the hotel at the early hours of the morning. Please note: drinks are not included.
Tsavo National Park [East] Full day Tour No KTM115
Leaving Mombasa before sunrise, a drive of about 115kms towards Nairobi takes you to Bachuma Gate, where you enter the East section of the Tsavo National Park – Kenya’s largest game sanctuary, famed for its huge herds of Elephants. It is also the home of lion, rhino, giraffe and zebra. You will see waterbirds at the Aruba Dam on the way to the Voi Safari Lodge for lunch. Good photographs of a variety of animals that come to drink at the waterhole in front of the lodge may be taken. After lunch, a game drive, before returning to Mombasa in the afternoon.
Deep Sea Fishing
Kenya’s coast offers some of the world’s best deep-sea fishing. All boats are licensed and equipped with regulatory safety features which superbly maintain fishing tackle, and are manned by the most experienced, friendly, professional crew. Sail fish, Marlin and Shark are abundant throughout the season. During August and September, the hard fighting Yellow Fin Tuna are plentiful.
